Entrepreneurs: Is Your LinkedIn Summary Hitting Its Target?

Your LinkedIn summary is your business card, your professional online presence, your About Us, your marketing pitch… but is it helping your prospects see what sets you apart from the masses? With over 470 million members, this network is a gold mine for increasing your client base, so make sure your summary is the best it can be. Here are a few ways to optimize it.

  • How can you help your prospects address their challenges? Be clear and convincing when describing what you can offer them.

  • How will people benefit from doing business with you instead of your competitors? Stand out from the crowd. Be unique. The competition is fierce!

  • How are you qualified to help your potential customers? Clearly indicate your professional skills.

  • What action(s) do you hope users take when reading your summary? Include calls to action (subscribe to our newsletter/contact us). And don’t forget to provide your contact information (website, phone number, email address)!

Don’t check out your competitors’ profiles to get inspired, but to set yourself apart, and avoid empty, overused words. One last tip: avoid dull verbs such as behave, and let, and choose action verbs instead!

Which language should you use?

Are you targeting an English-speaking or a French-speaking audience? Your prospects should be able to read your summary. Get a professional translation agency to translate your LinkedIn summary!

4 FAQs

Should I write in the first person (I) or the third person (he/she)?

You’re selling a product or service. Your prospects are “buying” the person behind the brand. They’ll therefore be more attracted by “I” statements. Be authentic!

Is the length of my summary important?

Yes! A summary with more than 40 words increases your chances of appearing in search results. You should therefore use the 2000-character limit strategically. Continuous, flowing text is preferable, but if you don’t have time, bullet points can be a lifesaver!

Is it a good idea to insert keywords into my summary?

It’s essential! Much like the length of the text, inserting keywords improves your search engine ranking. Two tips: 1) Prioritize keywords that can be found on your website. 2) Don’t abuse them! Above all, you want to appeal to your prospects.

Is it really necessary to have a company page if the summary on my personal LinkedIn page already talks about my company’s services?

The bigger your online presence, the better! We live in a hyperconnected world where everything has to be easily accessible. If an internet user enters the name of your company on LinkedIn, you want them to be able to find it quickly. Take advantage of this page to add keywords and clearly describe what you’re offering.

Not sure about the quality of your LinkedIn summary? Contact us! We’re happy to help you maximize the potential of your summary and increase your brand’s exposure on this network.
